ADMK Co-ordinator OPS has lashed out at cm stalin and Finance minister PTR for not reducing the cost of petrol and diesel even after Central Goverment reduced the VAT prices. "As the federal government has decreased the excise duty on fuel by five rupees per litre and the excise duty on diesel by ten rupees per litre, 25 indian states, including Congress-ruled states, have drastically reduced the value-added tax on petrol and diesel," he said in a statement.

Tamil Nadu residents are dissatisfied that Finance minister Palanivel Thiagarajan stated that the central government should decrease taxes on gasoline and diesel to the same level as it did in 2014, and that this will automatically reduce state levies. On 06.06.2018, the then leader of the Opposition and current prime minister MK stalin addressed the tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, urging the tamil Nadu government to take immediate action within its power to reduce petrol and diesel prices, pointing out that the tax on petrol and diesel in kerala had been reduced by one rupee. He believes that commodity prices will have an impact on the people, particularly mothers, and that the government should move quickly to address the problem.

At a time when petrol and diesel prices in tamil Nadu are lower than in kerala, the incumbent chief minister has demanded that the tamil Nadu government reduce taxes on petrol and diesel by one rupee, but today not only the central government, but also 25 states, including the Congress-ruled states of punjab and Rajasthan, have reduced taxes on petrol and diesel by one rupee. It is not viable to do so in tamil Nadu because diesel taxes have been decreased and petrol and diesel prices are cheaper in most states than in tamil Nadu. The Finance Minister's announcement is disappointing.

The Finance minister stated in his statement that the base price of gasoline and diesel on 1.8.2014, 2.11.2011, and 4.11.2021, which includes federal taxes and the state government's value added tax, will not be able to cut the state tax because the federal tax will continue to rise. While the federal government tax applies to all indian states, the people of tamil Nadu believe it is illogical for most states to claim that the tamil Nadu government cannot decrease taxes on its own.
