To raise revenue, the telangana government raised liquor prices by 20 to 25 percent. All liquor prices have been raised, which is estimated to bring in an additional Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 7,000 crore in annual revenue for the government. In 2021-22, the state received Rs 30,000 crore from liquor sales, with tax revenue of Rs 12,000 crore. The price of 1,000 ml liquor has been raised by Rs 120 by the government. The price has increased from Rs 495 to Rs 615.

A Rs 20 increase has been made to the price of a quarter bottle. There was a minimum increase of Rs 10 a bottle on all types of beer. The new rates will be implemented on Thursday. On wednesday night, after the day's sales had ended, excise authorities checked the liquor stockpiles at wine shops, bars, and pubs. From Thursday, the available stocks will be sold at revised pricing. Liquor prices have been raised for the first time since the implementation of the Liquor Policy 2021-23. Liquor prices in the state were last raised in May 2020, shortly after the first phase of Covid-19 shutdown ended.

This comes at a time when the state is running out of money to sustain its social programmes because the federal government has tightened loan and market borrowing rules. This is the latest in a series of revenue-raising initiatives enacted by the state government. It recently increased land market value, property registration fees, transportation fares, and electricity fees.
