Breaking a congressional impasse that had stalled improvements for 30 years, the US house of Representatives recently enacted gun control measures that had already been approved by the Senate. President Joe Biden's aides have stated that he is waiting to sign the law, therefore it is currently on its way to his desk for his approval and enactment.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi remarked on the house floor, "With this bipartisan package, we take the first steps to fight back on behalf of the American people, who desperately want new measures to keep communities safe in the high percentages in the polling. The survival of our children is more important than your political survival, I say to those who lacked the fortitude to participate in this task.

In 1994, assault weapons were outlawed as part of the most recent change to gun legislation. Following a national outcry and outrage over the recent killings of 10 African Americans in Buffalo, New York, and 19 children at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, just 10 days apart, the new legislation, which has been described as a modest attempt to reform America's infamously lax gun laws, was passed.

10 senators from the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively led by chris Murphy and john Cornyn, worked together to develop the plan. In a 65-33 vote, the 100-member Senate passed the measure with the support of all 50 Democrats and 15 Republicans. It was approved by the house 234 to 193 with 15 Republicans voting in favour.

The law makes a feeble effort to limit public access to firearms. It increases background checks for potential buyers between the ages of 18 and 21—the shooters in Buffalo and Uvalde were both 18—includes abusive dating partners on the list of people who could be barred from purchasing firearms, and, finally, aims to encourage states to enact red-flag laws that would enable law enforcement or relatives to prevent firearms from falling into the hands of people who could harm either themselves or others. Additionally, the law aims to invest $15 billion in mental health services and school security.
