Iran is on fire..! women cutting their hair & protesting..!?

After the death of a teenage girl in iran, women across the country are protesting by cutting their hair and burning their hijabs. As this protest has intensified now, let us look at the background of the protest. Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman from the city of Saghez in the western part of iran, went to Tehran, the capital, with her parents on the 13th. She was then arrested by the Special Branch Police. The task of this special unit of police is to monitor the way women dress. Mahsa Amini was arrested by the Special Branch police on the charge that she was not wearing a hijab properly. Mahsa Amini, who was in a coma for 3 days, died on the 16th when there was an allegation that she was severely beaten in police custody. The police have said that Mahsa Amini has epilepsy and was operated on for a brain tumor at a young age. Masha died due to poor health.

However, the girl's parents denied that their daughter had any disease and she was in perfect health. Following this, an inquiry has been ordered into the death of Mahsa Amini and it has been reported that it will take up to 3 weeks to find out the cause of her death. Mahsa Amini's death has sent shockwaves across Iran. women in various parts of iran are taking part in protests to cut their hair and burn their hijabs. Also, many women are posting videos of themselves cutting their hair on social media. Iranian girls have mentioned that they cannot go to school or work without covering their hair from the age of 7 and that they are fed up with this gender inequality regime. Knowing that action will be taken if they violate the dress code, women are bravely taking part in this struggle.

The Iranian government is using repression to control the protests. The protestors are being attacked by throwing teargas shells and batons. Also, the paramilitary has stepped in to control the protest. Human rights organizations operating in iran have alleged that 38 people were injured in the rubber bomb attack. A video of Amini's father arguing with religious clerics about his daughter being killed for having 2 hairs after refusing to allow him to offer Islamic prayers at her funeral has gone viral on social media.
Attacks on women based on clothing in iran are not new. The days of turmoil have now gained international attention with the death of Masha Amini. Only in afghanistan under Taliban rule are such fundamentalist laws being actively enforced. Even islamic countries including saudi arabia are relaxing many restrictions on women. However, this movement shows that the time has come to withdraw the restrictions imposed on women in the name of the dress.
