Following a significant earthquake, more than 3,800 people have died in turkey and neighbouring northwest Syria. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which shook both nations early on monday, caused entire apartment buildings to collapse, destroyed hospitals, and injured or displaced hundreds more.
The harsh winter weather made it difficult to find survivors through the night while rescue attempts went on. Temperatures dropped down below freezing overnight, making things worse for those who were left homeless or trapped under debris.

WHO warns that the death toll might rise eight-fold
The World health Organization has warned that the death toll from a powerful earthquake in southeast turkey, close to the Syrian border, might increase eight-fold. The death toll, which now exceeds 3,400, has rapidly risen since the first earthquake struck early on monday morning.
