On Saturday, ace indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the women's 49kg weightlifting event, becoming the first indian to earn an Olympic medal at the 2020 tokyo Games. Mirabai began with two solid snatch lifts before earning a silver Medal in the clean and jerk with a spectacular first lift. Hou Zhihui of china won the gold medal because he was simply too talented on the day.

Mirabai's first try in the snatch was a successful 84 kg before she tried for the 87kg and easily achieved it. Her third try at 89, however, was unsuccessful. Mirabai was in contention for a silver medal after the snatch event.
After first breaking the record with a life of 92, China's Hou Zhihui established an Olympic record with a lift of 94kg in the snatch event. In the meanwhile, Mirabai owns the World Record for the clean and jerk, which she set in April. Remember, she botched all three clean and jerk efforts in Rio.

India's Mirabai needed a valid lift of 110 to all but ensure india would win their first medal at the tokyo Games. The indian and Chinese weightlifters had to wait as the rest of the field based on entry weights went through their attempts and the emotional turmoil involved with that. Belgium's Nina Sterckx, 18, who saw her attempt ruled out, was one of the many distraught lifters.
