With rumours that China's weightlifter Zhihui Hou would be tested by anti-doping authorities, Mirabai Chanu, India's Olympic silver medallist in the tokyo Games, has a chance to win gold. Hou won gold in the 49-kg weightlifting division on Saturday. India's Mirabai Chanu would be given gold if she fails the exam. It's also been revealed that Hou has been requested to stay in tokyo, implying that the test will go place.

“She has been requested to remain in tokyo until the test is carried out. The test is unquestionably taking place,” an insider close to the situation told ANI.

Hou also set a new Olympic record with a total weight of 210kg. If an athlete fails a doping test, the rules explicitly stipulate that the athlete who won silver will be awarded the gold.

Mirabai had started India's medal tally on Saturday, lifting a total of 202 kilogrammes (87 kilogrammes in snatch and 115 kilogrammes in clean and jerk) in four successful tries across the tournament.

With her historic silver medal, the 26-year-old weightlifter became only the second indian woman to earn an Olympic medal, following Karnam Malleswari's bronze in the 69kg category in the 2000 Sydney Games, which was the first time the weightlifting arena was available to women.
