Basavaraj S Bommai has been chosen as the next chief minister of karnataka by the bharatiya janata party (BJP) parliamentary party. Basavaraj Bommai served as the home minister with in BS Yediyurappa cabinet and was a leading candidate for the position of chief minister. Bommai's name was suggested by BS Yediyurappa and supported by Karjol ashok Eshwarappa and other bjp MLAs during the BJP's party meeting. The incoming chief minister, like the former cmBS Yediyurappa, who resigned on Monday, is from the powerful political Lingayat group.


Only 3 of Karnataka's 22 chief ministers have completed their full terms thus far. BS Yediyurappa, the departing chief minister, served in the position for 1,901 days across four terms. Chief ministers have been unable to serve for more than a year on nine occasions. Basavaraj Bommai is a member of the Sadara Lingayat community. He comes from the 'janata pariwar' and is a political ally of BS Yediyurappa. His father, SR Bommai, was also the cm of Karnataka.

Basavaraj Bommai joins the party in 2008 and has subsequently climbed through the ranks. He used to be in charge of the water resources portfolio. He is a professional engineer who began his career with the Tata group. BS Yediyurappa, the departing chief minister of karnataka, is a member of the Veerashaiva-Lingayat group. This is the community that the bjp considers to be its strongest supporter in Karnataka. Since 1956, eight of Karnataka's 20 cm have come from the Lingayat minority. The group now accounts for approximately 17% of the state's population.
