India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested a new variant of the unmanned aerial akash missile on september 27, 2021. The new missile, dubbed "Akash Prime," was deployed at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha. According to the DRDO, this was the akash Prime missile's first flight test after enhancements. During the test, it intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial target that looked like an enemy plane.

The akash Prime missile defense system is a more advanced variant of the akash missile system. It now has domestic Radio Frequency (RF) seekers, which improves its accuracy while intercepting targets in various weather situations. The new upgrades enable akash Prime to operate in low-temperature environments at high altitudes such as India's northern and northeastern frontiers.

According to the DRDO, "the recent flight test was conducted using a revised ground equipment of the present akash weapons platform." The missile trajectory and flight characteristics were monitored by ITR range stations, which included radars, EOTS, and monitoring stations.” On the celebration of the flawless flight test of the akash Prime missile, Union minister of Defence rajnath singh and DRDO Chairperson Dr G Satheesh reddy sent congratulations messages to the armed services.
