Landslides have occurred in idukki and kottayam districts due to heavy rains in Kerala. A similar landslide occurred in idukki in august last year in the Rajamala area. More than 65 were killed. Many Tamils died in the landslide.

It has been reported that 6 members of the same family have been killed in a landslide in Koottikkal hill village in Kerala. At Ottalangal near Balapalli, 6 people in the house were trapped in the landslide. Of these, only the bodies of 3 have been recovered so far.

How did it happen? 

The landslide was expected after two days of rain and so many were evacuated to safer places yesterday. Various rocks and trees fell from the idukki hill area due to rain in idukki yesterday. This caused instability in the soil and it caused landslides.

Surrounding Rivers 

Most of the rivers around idukki were flooded by mountain waterfalls and this further accelerated the landslide. That is why there was a landslide last night and early this morning. It is said that there is a possibility of further landslides in the idukki, kottayam and Malappuram areas due to continuous rains. This is seen as another disaster after 2020.

State and National Disaster Rescue Troops are currently involved in the rescue operation there. Troops and paramilitary forces are currently deployed in idukki to rescue troops.
