Starring mohanlal in the lead role, the film stars keerthi Suresh, Prabhu, Arjun, Manju Warrier, ashok Selvan, Suhasini, Pranav mohanlal, Arjun, sunil shetty among others. The film focuses on the life of Kunhali Marakkar, the naval chief of the Zamorin in Kozhikode, who fought against the Portuguese invasion in the 16th century, and his struggles.
Composed by Ronnie Raphael, the film has Mr Cinematography. Iyappan Nair has worked as an MS cinematographer.

Prior to its release, the film won three awards at the 67th National Film Awards: Best Picture, Best Special Effect and Best Costume Design.
