Cuba without electricity after Hurricane Ian...


Cyclone 'Ian' has wreaked havoc on the west coast of cuba and some areas around the US. Cuba's power supply has been cut as soon as Hurricane Ian arrived on the west coast of Cuba. In addition, tobacco crops in cuba have also been affected. The administration is working fast to start supplying electricity to more than 11 million people of the country.


According to a report, initially about one million people in the western provinces of cuba were interrupted by electricity, but later the entire grid came to a standstill. In recent months, people here have faced frequent power cuts. This storm came as a Category-3 storm on the western side of the island. This has severely affected the Pinar del Rio province, where most of the tobacco used for Cuban cigars is cultivated.


Thousands of homes affected, people evacuated safely

Thousands of people were evacuated to safer places before the arrival of Hurricane Ian. It caused floods, damaged houses and uprooted trees. Authorities are still assessing the damage. However, no casualty was reported till tuesday night. 

Robaina, the owner of Finca Robaina cigar maker, posted some pictures of the devastation caused by the storm on social media. These include pictures of wooden and thatch roofs falling to the ground, greenhouses overturned. State media said Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel visited the affected areas. The authorities have set up 55 shelter homes and had also taken steps to protect crops, especially tobacco.

The US National Hurricane Center said that due to the impact of the storm, winds gusted up to 205 kilometers per hour in Cuba. Some videos surfaced on social media showing downed power lines and broken roads in Pinar del Rio, Artemisa and Maibec provinces. A hospital in Pinar del Rio was also damaged. Andy Munoz, 37, a farmer who lives in Playa Cajio in Artemisa, said the city was flooded. He said that many people's belongings were destroyed due to the storm.
