Indian Navy: A gift for retired naval personnel, agreement to work on commercial ships
The announcement comes amid widespread protests against the recently launched 'Agneepath' scheme for recruiting soldiers in the armed forces on a short-term contract basis. 

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Directorate General of Shipping and the indian Navy to benefit the personnel retiring from the indian Navy and provide them an opportunity to work on Merchant Ships. The Directorate General of Shipping, under the Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways, has issued an order detailing 16 transition plans for indian Navy personnel to the merchant navy, the statement said.
These plans have been prepared after detailed discussions with the indian Navy. The announcement comes amid widespread protests against the recently launched 'Agneepath' scheme for recruiting soldiers in the armed forces on a short-term contract basis. The soldiers recruited under this scheme will be called 'Agnivar'.These schemes enable the smooth transfer of retired indian Navy personnel to the Merchant Navy by obtaining the necessary certification to operate on merchant ships as per the international Maritime Organization's Training Certification and Watchkeeping Convention standards, the statement said.


According to the statement, these plans cover the transition of personnel involved in engine room work on naval ships ranging from ratings to artificers to engineers and to those working on electrical duties as well as mechanical engine duties. also provide options. The scheme offers indian Navy personnel a range of options from NCV Ship to Foreign Going Ship certification, the statement said.

The scheme envisages acknowledgment of training imparted by the indian Navy to its officers and rating and experience of maritime service on indian Navy or cargo ships on the basis of a certificate issued by the indian Navy.
