The red fort will be closed to the public from July 21 till the completion of the Independence Day celebrations on august 15, according to an order from the Archaeological survey of india (ASI). According to authorities, this is a week longer than the customary closure of the fort for the public a week before Independence Day.

The Director-General of Archaeological survey of india, in exercise of the powers accorded under Rule 6 of the Ancient Monuments as well as Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959, hereby directs that no entry shall be made inside the red fort from the morning of July 21st, 2021, to the morning of august 15th , 2021, until the Independence Day Celebrations are over, as per the A.S.I. order.

According to reports, which cited anonymous officials, the red fort is normally closed to the public for seven days before Independence Day. The fort, however, will be closed to the public for an extended period this year, as ordered by the A.S.I.

The delhi Police had proposed in a letter on July 12 that the red fort be closed from July 15 due to security concerns and the COVID-19 epidemic.
