Tamil Nadu chief minister MK stalin has written to 12 state chief ministers, stressing the need to restore the primacy of state governments in managing the education sector and calling for a concerted effort to do so.


 In this connection, the government of tamil Nadu today (Oct. 04) issued a press release:


The chief minister said in the letter that he was enclosing the report submitted by the panel of Justice AK Rajan, appointed by the government of tamil Nadu, to examine whether the admission process based on National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) in the last few years has affected the backward students in the society.


He noted that the committee was asked to recommend alternative admission procedures that would benefit all students the feasibility of implementing such alternatives. Further, on the recommendation of Judge AK Rajan's panel, he noted that the tamil Nadu Legislative assembly had recently passed the draft 'Admission Act for tamil Nadu Undergraduate Medical Studies, 2021' and a copy of that draft would be attached to this letter.


In the letter, the chief minister said that the Central government's move to introduce NEET selection was against the basic philosophy and their position shows that the constitutional balance of power is violated by stripping state governments the right to decide on admission to medical institutions established and run by state governments.


In this regard, he said that they want the state governments to uphold their constitutional right and position in determining the system of admission in higher education institutions.


The chief minister said that he would look into the documents attached to his letter and express his support to ensure that students from rural and marginalized communities. It will also be seen that they do not have difficulty in getting admission in higher education institutions and to ensure that students from their respective states are not affected.


He called on all the Chief Ministers to make a concerted effort to restore the priority of the State Governments in managing the education sector as stated in our Constitution and stated that he was looking forward to the co-operation of all on this important issue.
