The TNPSC chooses the staff and officers. Competitive examinations at various levels, such as Group-1, Group-2, Group-2-A, and Group-4, are held for this purpose. Group-4 jobs do not require an interview. Written tests and interviews will be performed for Group-1 and Group-2 level postings. Municipal Commissioner, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Char-Registrar, Prison Probation Officer, Assistant Labor Officer, Bachelor Employment Officer (ASO), Assistant Audit Assistant Analyst, Senior Analyst of Co-operative Societies, Handloom Analyst Analyst, Revenue Assistant, and Municipal Executive Officer are some of the positions available.

Group-2-A examinations are used to fill positions such as Assistant and interview Clerk in various government departments. Interviews were removed a few years ago, as they had been in the central government before Group-B assignments. For Group-B assignments, just a written test is now administered. The Railway Selection Board is now determining appointments for Group-B positions solely based on the results of the written test, with no interview.

In light of this, the tamil Nadu government has decided to eliminate the interview requirement for most Group-2 positions. According to government sources, the government has decided to hold interviews solely for Group-2 positions with pay levels over the established pay scale, and to eliminate interviews for the majority of the remaining positions. Group-2 jobs that are eliminated during the interview are likely to be reclassified as Group-2-A jobs.
