Mir Iradath ali Khan Great Grand Son of H.E.H. Nawab Mir Osman ali Khan Bahadur Nizam VII aged 54 yearswas suffering from a rare disease “congenital altianto” for last 18 months was operated by NIMS Neurosurgery doctors this week.The operation lasted 4 hours and the patient recovered fully following the surgery.

He has been suffering from a rare disease “congenital altianto” axial dislocation where in the bones connecting brain and spine are defective resulting in the compression of the spinal cord.The place where the compression was evident,harbours sensitive respiratory and cardiovascular regulatory centers. Patient was having weakness of all four limbs with breathing difficulty.
During Surgery patient was carefully turned to prone position and anaesthetized and the craniovertebral junction (the portion of the spine connection head and spine) was exposed and the loose bones were fixed with Titanium implants. During surgery patient had sever haemodynamic changes which were managed successfully by anesthesia team and patient was stabilized and surgery was successfully completed without any problem. Very next day patient was mobilized.
The patient has his symptoms since 18 months and did not opt for surgery due to critical location of the problem. However as patient was deteriorating rapidly he had no choice but to opt for surgery.These sort of cases require early detections and proper treatment before they cause these devastating symptoms and signs. However in this patient due to meticulous planning and treatment the devastating complications were averted.
The surgical team lead by DrViyayasaradhi, others include Dr Rajesh, DrBhavaniprasad,DrVasundharaRangan and Dr Ali. The Anaesthesia team was led by DrSrilatha.
