On wednesday, kerala chief minister pinarayi vijayan tweeted saying that, “Kerala has received 73,38,806 doses of vaccine from GoI. We've provided 74,26,164 doses, even making use of the extra dose available as wastage factor in each vial. Our health workers, especially nurses have been super efficient and deserve our wholehearted appreciation!”

This clearly shows that using the extra doses, kerala has provided 87,358 extra vaccine doses to the people. At a point where the vaccine shortage is highly reported by the states, this is a great move by the kerala government.

Here wastage dose or overfill refers to the tiny bottles called vials. Vaccines come in those tiny bottles and in india the vaccines are supplied in multi-dose vials, with enough vaccine to inoculate multiple people.

In the multi-dose vials, there can be a difference between the number of doses labelled on the vaccine vial and the actual number of doses that can be extracted from the vial. This is done so as to compensate the wastage or spillage that occur during vaccine administration.

PM modi tweeted in response to kerala cm tweet and said, "Good to see our healthcare workers and nurses set an example in reducing vaccine wastage. Reducing vaccine wastage is important in strengthening the fight against COVID-19."
