Mani Ratnam's upcoming historical drama Ponniyin Selvan: I or ponniyin selvan Part 1 draws its inspiration from actual historical occurrences and figures from the Chola dynasty. The 1955 novel ponniyin selvan by kalki Krishnamurthy, which was published in five parts, is the inspiration for the two-part movie series, the first of which will be released this Friday.

Kundavai, the Chola princess and daughter of Emperor Sundara Chola, is portrayed by trisha krishnan, who has only been in one bollywood movie, Khatta Meetha (2010), which she co-starred in with Akshay Kumar. In a recent interview, the actress discussed the analogies between the novel and the movie and compared it to the Harry Potter series of books and films.

In her interview with The Hindu, trisha also revealed that the renowned director had requested her to put the books down "I was in the middle of the books when Mani sir really asked me to stop reading them before he arrived on site. He didn't want me to go into the shoot with any preconceived notions about who I would be playing." In response to the comparisons, the actress stated further, "Consider how much the Harry Potter books and movies are loved by their audiences, yet there are glaring contrasts between the two and some scenes that haven't been captured on camera. PS, Mani sir's sloppy rendition of the five volumes of kalki, is just like that."
