Jennifer lawrence has acted in a number of mainstream and major studio productions, including Don't Look Up from last year, in which she co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio. Now, lawrence is going back to her indie cinema roots to appear in a meaningful and touching indie movie. Causeway, Lila Neugebauer's feature film debut as a director, is a subdued, reflective, and peaceful film. It was written by Elizabeth Sanders, Luke Goebel, and Ottessa Moshfegh.

Causeway centres on Lynsey (Jennifer Lawrence), a military engineer who sustains a brain injury while serving and is forced to return home to recover. Lynsey finds it challenging to adjust to civilian life, and she doesn't want to spend too much time with her mother (Linda Emond), as she is eager to be deployed again. Lynsey secures a job cleaning pools while she waits for her doctor (Stephen McKinley Henderson) to give the all-clear. She quickly becomes friends with james (Brian Tyree Henry), a mechanic who has experienced trauma of his own. As they spend more time together, they both come to the realisation that in order to go on, they must both overcome the past and frequently battle to do so.

Causeway refrains from criticising its characters. Instead, the movie gives the audience a clear understanding of who they are while still providing opportunity for empathy. There are plenty of character dramas in the plot, but neither are there any simple solutions, nor is the movie prepared to neatly resolve each problem. For a while, it adapts to the discomfort as it builds toward the characters' eventual transformation and development. Since Lynsey and James' friendship served as an anchor in the midst of the crushing waves that threatened to drown them both, the journey's rocky finale was fulfilling. The trauma that the protagonists carry around from their past is the main theme of the movie.

Their interactions and digs at one another feel quite natural since they have such amazing chemistry. lawrence gives a reserved but not empty performance. It's simple to identify with Lynsey and her attempts at mending because to her portrayal of her. It's the kind of fascinating performance that serves as a reminder to viewers of her strength as an actress. Henry, who continues to display his versatility, gives a strong performance as James. james is portrayed by Henry as having charisma, although his persona is far more nuanced than that.
