My Policeman, a film adaptation of Bethan Roberts' novel that was directed by Michael Grandage and written by Ron Nyswaner, is a tale of suffering, heartache, and remorse. My Policeman tugs at the heartstrings as it examines a complicated connection between tom and Patrick, a gay pair, and the woman the former married, even though it veers into melodrama territory and doesn't explore its characters any more than it has to in order to make its point. Although the love triangle drama is predictable, fans will nevertheless connect with it even though the story and characters might have been developed much further.

Tom Burgess (Harry Styles), a police officer, meets and falls in love with Patrick Hazelwood (David Dawson), a museum curator, in this film, which is mostly set in Brighton in the 1950s. While tom marries Marion Taylor (Emma Corrin), a teacher who thinks Patrick might be gay and is influencing tom, they continue their relationship. It is discovered that Patrick (Rupert Everett) suffered a stroke decades later. Patrick is taken in by Marion (Gina McKee), who looks after him while persuading tom (Linus Roache) to get in touch with his ex-girlfriend. A movie that emphasises the complex connections at its core and the historical traumas they all must overcome collides the past and present.

Harry Styles is endearing as the younger tom, but his portrayal falls short of the emotional depth required to go deeper into his persona. David Dawson as the young, passionate, and witty Patrick and Gina McKee as the older Marion, who is trying so incredibly hard to make apologies but is at her wit's end trying to get through to her husband, are without a doubt the scene stealers here. They both deliver performances that are so full of longing, feeling, and empathy. The script provides explanations for Marion's behaviour, and McKee delivers her final monologue with such passion, fervour, and exasperation that one cannot not but feel some sympathy for her. It would have been so simple to picture Marion as the villain.
