There is a mosque next to the madrassa. It looks barren now. Its three-foot-high window frames are broken. The wings of the fans hanging from the ceiling are bent downwards. Nearly half a dozen chandeliers in the mosque shattered as they were pelted with stones.

A Muslim family lives right behind the mosque. Opposite it lives a Hindu family. None of the two houses nearby dared to even open the door.

It is located in the Chantila area of Dharmanagar district in the state of Tripura. It recently witnessed the first-ever religious clashes in the state.

What happened, why did it happen?

Violence against Hindus erupted on Durgashtami day in october 2021 in many parts of neighbouring bangladesh, India.

They first started in Kamila city in Chittagong district. The Bangladeshi government warned india and reassured the minority Hindus in their country.

"India has done a lot for us. We are indebted to it. We must ensure that our country is not affected, that the Hindu community here is not harmed and that no incidents take place there," said bangladesh Prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

But the impact of the violence was immediately felt in the state of Tripura, which borders bangladesh on three sides.

Nearly 10 days after the incident, news broke that a mosque had been set on fire by some unidentified persons in the Gomti district. After that, news spread that an attempt to attack mosques in the Sipahijala district had failed.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Ulema (Hind), said there was a threat to peace between the Hindu and Muslim communities in the state. They also received assurances from the government.
