The West bengal Legislative assembly passed a motion on november 17 opposing the Union Government's october 11 directive extending the Border Security Force's authority to punjab, West bengal, and Assam.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West bengal, said she would raise strong objections to expanding the Border Security Force's (BSF) jurisdiction in the state from 15 to 50 kilometres from the international border with bangladesh when she meets prime minister Narendra Modi in delhi on Wednesday. They (the centre) will never be able to dominate us. The state is in charge of law and order. The Border Protection Act has our respect, but we will not allow it to dominate our region. The bjp relies on central government agencies to stay in power.
