June 25, 2022 is the 47th anniversary of the Emergency. Emergency was imposed in india on this day in 1975 . fakhruddin ali ahmed was the President of india at this time. He declared emergency on the recommendation of the then PM Indira Gandhi. Emergency in india lasted from 25 june 1975 to 21 march 1977. This was a dark period in the history of indian democracy. During this, there were continuous violations of human rights.

Censorship was imposed on the media. There were violations on civil liberties. More than one lakh people were arrested across the country. It all started with a decision of the allahabad High Court. In fact, on june 12, 1975, indira gandhi was convicted by the High Court. Along with this, he was ousted from his post for six years.

There were 14 other serious allegations against Indira like giving bribe to voters, misuse of government machinery, etc. Indira did not accept the decision of the allahabad High Court. He approached the supreme Court. But on june 24, 1975, the supreme court also upheld the order of the High court, although the  Supreme  Court had allowed indira gandhi to remain in the PM's chair.

Further on june 25, 1975, 'JP' raised its voice against Indira and with this, demonstrations started across the country till Indira's resignation. Finally, on 25 june 1975, 'Emergency' was imposed in the country. Also the opposition leaders who protested were sent to jail. In january 1977, the government said that it would hold elections soon.

The congress had to face defeat in the march 1977 elections. All the opposition leaders had united for the establishment of 'Janata Party'. In the 6th lok sabha elections, the Janata party came to power with a huge majority. For the first time after independence, a non-Congress party came to power. indira gandhi and Sanjay gandhi themselves lost the lok sabha elections.
