Ahsan Iqbal said the government of pakistan was borrowing from other countries and organizations to reduce tea purchases by 1-2 cups, as it was importing tea.Pakistan imported $ 400 million worth of tea in the 2021-22 financial year. It was $ 340 million in 2020-21. Tea is an important component of Pakistan's total imports. pakistan is one of the world's leading tea importers, with the government spending about $ 600 million annually on tea imports from the central bank's hard currency reserves alone.In this context, the Higher education Commission of pakistan (HEC) has asked the vice-chancellors of universities in the country to encourage the consumption of local beverages such as lassi and nutritious food given the growing financial crisis in the country.HEC Executive Chairman Dr. Shaista Sohail said that drinking lassi instead of tea would increase employment in the country and generate income for the general public.
