An authorized tourism boat carrying 63 passengers including 11 crew members capsized near Devipatnam in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh which is on its way to Papikondalu got capsized near Kachhuluru. According to the latest information, 24 passengers have swum to safety, and 12 were dead. The death toll is likely to increase as the search operations are still on. 


They had started from the Gandi Pochamma temple near Devipatnam and the boat reportedly capsized near Kachhuluru, which is a danger spot. Those who were saved are wearing life jackets and the others may not be wearing life jackets. Weak cellphone signals are hampering relief operations and two NDRF teams are already pressed into rescue operations.


The government has also spoken to ONGC that has its headquarters in Rajahmundry for its choppers to be deployed to help in rescue operations. In July 2018, a boat carrying 40 passengers had also capsized in the Godavari. Tourism Minister, Avanthi srinivas brushed off his and his government's responsibility saying that the permission to the boat was not given during his government.
