A five-judge bench of the supreme court rejected on tuesday the curative petitions filed by two of the four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. The two accused were Vinay Sharma (26) and mukesh Kumar (32) had filed curative petitions on january 9th saying that there is no merit in their argument.

A curative petition is the last and final legal remedy available to a person. It is interesting to note that two other death-row convicts, akshay kumar Singh (31) and pawan Gupta (25), had not filed curative petitions. Last week, a delhi court passed an order for execution of the men and set the date i.e, on january 22nd.

They are likely to file the curative petition in the last minute to postpone the Execution Date. All the four convicts are likely to appeal to the President of india, Ramnath Kovind for mercy. But recently, President Kovind clarified that the convicts in such cases should not be granted mercy. That means they can only postpone the execution date at best but not cancel it. The entire nation is waiting for their execution.
