prime minister narendra modi has appealed to voluntarily switch off lights between 9:00 p.m to 9:09 pm on april 5th. “Please switch off the lights of your house — and then either at the door, or in the balcony of your house, please light a candle, a diya, or flash the mobile phone light. That light will show that no one is alone,” he said.

There are some apprehensions that this sudden switching off lights and switching them on will cause grid instability and power fluctuations which may even lead to a complete blackout. However, power grid managers said they were gearing up for ensuring grid stability during the period.

They say that they are preparing in advance so that there is no pressure on the grid due to the possible grid collapse and resultant blackout throughout the country. All the five regional load despatch centers and national load despatch center are already working to ensure grid frequency is maintained even if demand drops suddenly during the blackout. But then, it looks like the prime minister is unnecessarily burdening the Power Department with this unnecessary event. At least the previous task of clapping for Frontline workers made some sense.
