Twitter is running a competition in the hopes of finding biases in its picture cropping algorithms, and the best teams will get cash awards (via Engadget). twitter hopes that by allowing team accessibility to its code and picture cropping model, they will be able to identify ways in which the algorithm might be detrimental for example, resizing in a way that biases or removes the image's topic.

Those that compete must submit a summary of their results as well as a dataset which can be put through the algorithms to show the problem. twitter also will give points depending on the kind of damages discovered, the possibility for individuals to be affected, and other factors. Following allegations that its previewing crops were racist, twitter modified its photo algorithm.

Twitter is launching a contest to enhance its image-cropping algorithms. This winning team will get $3,500, with $1,000 awards granted for the most creative and generalizable results. If you uncovered a bug that allowed you to execute activities for somebody else (like reposting a tweet) using cross-site programming, Twitter's standard bug bounty programme would pay you $2,940. Submissions are accepted till August 6th at 11:59 p.m. PT, as well as the competition winners would be revealed on August 9th.
