A 20-year-old woman suffering from microtia .. (development of outer ear) disease had her ear pierced with 3D printed technology. For the first time in the world, American doctors were successful in this surgery. It was developed by Texas-based company 3D Biotherapeutics.

Microtia .. means that the outer ears do not develop. It is a congenital malformation. people with this disease do not have external ears. So far it has not had surgery. American doctors were the first in the world to find a solution. A 20-year-old woman born with microtia was fitted with an external ear with 3D printed technology. This is the first time in the world.

Alexa, 20, of Mexico, has a small, irregular outer ear on the right side. The 3D biotherapists who examined her collected tissue from her other ear. The other ear was shaped using 3D technology called 'Arinovo' to make the mold look as natural as the right ear.

In the first clinical trial the doctors reconstructed the outer ear using the patient's own cartilage cells. The outer ear is printed in a size that fits the patient with 3D printed technology. It was then successfully fitted to the young woman. This is a 'ground breaking reconstructive procedure', 3D Bio said in a statement.

The procedure was led by Dr. Arduro Bonilla, a surgeon at the Microzia-Congenital Ear Deformity Institute in San Antonio, Texas. This ear was implanted in her through surgery. Alexa was discharged from the hospital on thursday after a month-long rest.

Dr Arturo said the new technology was used to reconstruct the ear using patients' cartilage cells. This makes it less likely that the body will reject the new ear. It is said that this advanced treatment is useful for people with a defect called microsia, in which one or both ears are incompletely externalized. So far the patient has been collecting cells from the ribs and using them for ear reconstruction.
