By the end of the year, amazon Meal, a food delivery business in india, will cease operations. The delivery service was only offered in Bengaluru and a few other locations when it was first introduced over two years ago as a direct competitor to zomato and Swiggy. amazon told the news organisation Reuters that it had confirmed the development and that any choices had been taken as part of the yearly operating planning review procedure. The business shut down its ed-tech service in india earlier this month and let go of thousands of employees.

Amazon separately informed The Economic Times that amazon Food would cease operations on december 29. It stated in a statement, "We don't make these choices carelessly. To take care of our current partners and clients, we are phasing out certain programmes. We are also providing transitional help for our impacted staff. amazon is still committed to giving its expanding customer base the best online shopping experience possible, with the broadest selection of goods available at competitive prices and in a convenient format."

When amazon Meal first debuted in May 2022, the business said that people wanted the app to go beyond basic needs and include food delivery. Currently, there is a separate section for food and medications on the main amazon app. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, amazon Food and amazon Academy made their debuts in india to assist customers in accessing necessary services at home. However, established players like swiggy and zomato as well as up-and-coming companies like Big Basket and Dunzo in the food delivery sector already controlled a large portion of the indian market. Byju's held a sizable portion of the indian market for ed-tech.
