Azim prem University has revealed its research report recently. According to the report, rural india saw a 15% increase in poverty while Urban areas recorded 20% uptick in poverty after one year of the pandemic.

Around 230 million indians slipped below the poverty line after one year of the Covid-19 pandemic, the report stated. According to the State of Working india Report 2021 released by researchers at Azim Premji University’s Centre for Sustainable Employment, these 230 million now earn less than the national minimum wage of Rs 375 per day.

Also the report said that the poorest 20% nearly lost all their income due to unemployment during the lockdown while the top 20% lost a little less than a quarter. local lockdowns forced more than half of permanent salaried workers, or formal workers, into informal jobs by the end of last year.

Almost 34% of formal workers moved into self-employment while 8.5% moved into temporary salaried roles and 9.8% to casual or daily wage jobs as per the report. The income levels loss was also detected during this time.

Economist Jean Dreze at the launch of the report said, the livelihood would not be over in even in another six months and may last over 1-3 years.
