The madras high court has ordered a ban on fish farming in the Agastheeswarar Swamy temple pond in Kumbakonam.

In a petition filed by Dandapani Gurus of kumbakonam Ivarpadi village in the chennai high court, "In 2002, the Commissioner of Hindu Charities Department has issued an order to declare the Agastheeswarar Swamy temple established by my ancestors 200 years ago as a private temple. The investigation initiated by the present Commissioner to re-examine this order is pending.

In this case, the head of Tandan Thotam panchayat is raising and selling fish in the relevant temple pond without any license or permission and is making a lot of profit. The temple pond used for puja and abhishekam should be banned from being used as a fish farm. "The panchayat president should be restrained from interfering in the temple pond issue," he had demanded in the petition.

In the order issued by the bench of madras high court in-charge Chief Justice D. raja and Manjula, which heard the case, fish farming cannot be accepted without considering that the water of the temple pond is used for puja. Therefore, they ordered to ban the use of the temple pond in Tandan Thotam village as a fish farm. Moreover, the judges have also mentioned in the order issued that the panchayat president should not interfere in the matter related to the pond.
