Indian movie fans are hoping to see an elusive oscar come home as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences prepares to reveal the winners of its awards this year at the 95th annual Academy Awards on march 12 (IST 5.30 a.m., Monday). The "Mozart of Madras," A.R. Rahman, received the Best Original Score oscar for the Danny Boyle-directed film "Slumdog Millionaire," which took home eight Academy Awards, in 2009.

Resul Pookutti received the oscar for Best Sound Mixing for "Slumdog Millionaire," and gulzar and A.R. rahman shared the Best Original Song prize for "Jai Ho," giving india a total of three Oscars for the film. Aman Mann and Shaunak Sen's All That Breathes for Best Documentary Feature Film, Guneet Monga and Kartiki Gonsalves's The Elephant Whisperers for Best Documentary Short Film, and S.S. Rajamouli's rrr (for Best Song - "Naatu Naatu") were all nominated for Academy Awards in 2023. india also received three nominations for the Grammy Award for Best Foreign language Film.

In the Best international Feature Film category, India's official oscar entry, "Chhello Show" or "Final Picture Show," was unable to advance to the final lineup. The 1983 Best Costume Design Academy Award went to bhanu Athaiya, who was the first indian to get it for richard Attenborough's 1982 movie Gandhi. The legendary director Satyajit Ray then received an honorary Academy Award in 1992.

Legendary actress Audrey Hepburn gave Ray the award, which he accepted in kolkata while lying in a sick bed, and praised his profound compassion and unusual command of the motion picture medium for their lasting impact on global audiences and filmmakers. Ray is still the only indian to date to receive an honorary Oscar. Nonetheless, Mehboob Khan's Mother india became the first ever indian film to be nominated for the Academy Awards in its 30th edition, under the category of Best Foreign language Film, marking the beginning of India's association with the awards ceremony.

The classic movie shows a widow battling abject poverty as she tries to raise her sons honourably. Its leading actors are Nargis, sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, and Raaj Kumar. india has received a small number of nominations for the coveted award since then. It's still vital to remember that while accolades and significant recognitions serve as a testament to the high calibre of the entries, good filmmaking in all its forms also finds a home on reputable international platforms, despite its generally smaller audience.

While the fairness of the Oscars is still up for question, some contend that because many highly praised movies don't win, the Academy Awards don't always truly represent the year's best movies. Yet, the overpowering praise from the Academy Awards would undoubtedly add another feather to the caps of indian filmmakers for their outstanding productions.
