In India, same-sex couples can now freely express their love for one another without worrying about being rejected in public. Despite the campaigners, same-sex couples, and other supporters who are battling for their cause, it appears that getting married in a civil ceremony is still a long way off for such couples. The Centre's most recent action has been to oppose supreme Court-pending petitions that ask for the recognition of same-sex unions.

Because, according to the government, such legislation "would completely wreck the delicate balance of personal laws in the country and in recognized society values," the legislature should be kept in charge of making such decisions. In fact, the Union government has submitted an affidavit stating that only the union of a man and a woman is recognized by marriage laws based on personal laws, codified laws relevant to diverse religious communities, and indian customs, which are also recognized as lawful.

The Center went on to say that it is established in society, culture, and law that couples of different sexes marry, and that this is something that "judicial interpretation" cannot change or undermine. Stay tuned with us for more updates.
