The Mullai Periyar Dam is releasing excess water into Kerala. As the northeast monsoon intensifies, heavy rains have lashed the Mullai Periyar watershed areas over the previous few days. As a result, the dam's water level is constantly rising. The water level of Mullaiperiyaru dam is 138.05 feet as of this morning. Water is pumped into the dam at a rate of 6635 cubic feet per second. Water is released at a rate of 2300 cubic feet per second from the dam.

Despite the fact that the supreme court and the Central Water Resources Authority (CWRA) have approved the dam retaining up to 142 feet of water, the kerala government is opposed to the dam being held at that level. In this situation, excess water from the Mullai Periyar Dam has been discharged to Kerala. At 7.29 a.m., extra water from the Mullai Periyar Dam was released at a rate of 534 cubic feet per second.

Dams 3 and 4 discharge 534 cubic feet of water per second, out of a total of 13 dams. The water passes through Vandiperiyar and Vallakkadavu on its way to idukki Dam. Farmers in Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathapuram, and Sivagangai districts have accused the kerala government of ruining the lives of Mullai Periyar irrigation farmers by not raising the dam's water level to 142 feet.
