If the amount of smashed cars and explosions are any indicator, Ambulance is a Michael Bay film. The action throughout the film is fierce, and the stakes are quite high. While the director's previous films haven't always been distinctive or consistently good, Ambulance is a welcome return to form. It's one of the most enjoyable Bay movies in a long time, with a superb ensemble that transcends the relatively shallow plot that culminates in an engaging actioner, adapted from the 2005 Danish picture of the same name and from a screenplay by chris Fedak.

Will Sharp (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is a veteran of the united states Marine Corps who is having difficulty finding work. His worry is compounded by the fact that his wife Amy (Moses Ingram) requires an experimental procedure that their insurance refuses to cover. Desperate, Will seeks a loan from his brother Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal). Danny, a skilled bank robber, persuades Will to assist him pull off a bank heist that will net them $32 million. Will agrees, and things appear to be going well until a rookie cop, Zach (Jackson White), unwittingly gets involved, prompting Danny and Will to steal an ambulance with EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza González) inside to flee.

Ambulance is a thrilling ride from beginning to end, however it drags on for 15 minutes too long, which detracts from the film's excitement. Danny and Will are trapped inside the ambulance with Cam for the bulk of the movie, caught in a high-speed chase with the Los Angeles police Department and one FBI agent (Keir O'Donnell) on their tail. It's a cramped place in the truck, and one might expect the suspense to wane quickly after the brothers board it, but it simply heightens the tension and makes the payoff all the more satisfying. The motion is spectacular in and of itself. Of course, fans will be entertained by exploding vehicles and high-octane chase scenarios.

Ambulance is a terrific time at the movies and one of the most entertaining pictures directed by Michael Bay in a long time. The editing heightens the suspense, and the action moments are thrilling and never lose their edge. While the picture veers off course and runs longer than it should, it strikes a solid mix between interpersonal dynamics and chase thrills. With a terrific cast in the centre, spectators will be thoroughly amused.
