The first wave of reviews for doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have arrived, and the Rotten Tomatoes score falls short of what most people expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is expected to shatter Marvel's movie multiverse, thus its critical and financial success might have a significant impact on the studio's future film plans.

After kicking off a major 2000s comic book boom with Spider-Man, sam Raimi is returning to make another Marvel film, this time doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, following the departure of the original doctor Strange director, Scott Derrickson. This time, Wanda Maximov (Elizabeth Olsen), a.k.a. Scarlett Witch (Benedict Cumberbatch), joins doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in what's being touted as the MCU's "scariest" film yet, further widening the MCU as the post-Avengers Endgame Phase 4 unfolds.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness now has a Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 75 percent, which, while still a Fresh score, is lower than the MCU's prior 84 percent average. Other than The Incredible Hulk and Thor: The Dark World, it's the only MCU film to have a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes but not the extra Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh seal. Eternals got the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the MCU just two MCU releases ago, at 47 percent, but the franchise has just four films with a score below 75 percent, making doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness the 24th highest-ranking MCU release out of 28 total MCU releases.

While the 14-point decline to 75 percent for the sequel may appear drastic, the audience score only dropped 3 points from 85 percent to 82 percent. While both audience and critic evaluations are subjective, the Rotten Tomatoes audience score has a far greater correlation with top-performing films than the Tomatometer critic score.
