My favourite movie as a child was Despicable Me. It was a humorous film with a wonderful, touching plot about a villain reforming his ways. However, the calibre of these films dropped when Illumination noticed those adorable yellow sidekicks in that movie and decided to create them their own spin-off franchise. Therefore, the Minions are back in Minions: The Rise of Gru, an animated comic adventure set years before Despicable Me, seven years after their spin-off made over $1 billion at the movie office. In this movie, 12-year-old Gru (Steve Carell) enlists the assistance of his Minions in his quest to join the Vicious 6 villainous group.

It won't do much more than keep kids entertained for an hour and a half with Minions: The Rise of Gru, but it is a tolerable, slightly amusing work of entertainment. Skywalker, Cobra, the Machines, and the Planet of the Apes rose to fame thanks to Hollywood. After making a brief appearance at the conclusion of the first Minions, it is now Gru's turn to assume the role of series leader. It's entertaining to watch Gru as a more impressionable, youthful figure who aspires to be a supervillain. He is a more impressionable, exuberant protagonist who is adjusting to hanging out with the Minions.

With the freshly renovated setting, director Kyle Balda gets to indulge in a little bit of fun. This film places itself in the 1970s with music, hairstyles, and clothing that are reminiscent of that time period, in a manner that is strikingly similar to The Black phone (but not really). The movie also has a traditional adventure plot with a valuable stone being stolen from a temple full of traps, and the opening title sequence is so ridiculously funny that you would never guess it. This movie has a lot to love, from its simplicity to the countless visual jokes the Minions can pull off.

Instead of the previous movie's continuous scenes of Minion shenanigans, the sequel makes the better decision to spend a lot of time with the human characters. The Godzilla movies are not like the Minions movies, where you eagerly await the conclusion of the human scenes in order to return to the title character. As an adult, listening to constant babbling from yellow anthropomorphic Tic-Tacs can cause your blood pressure to skyrocket. You can watch all the Minions you want as a kid.

While children will really love this movie, it's understandable for adult viewers to want more. The relationship between Gru and his disapproving mother, Marlena, offers the possibility of an emotional tale (Julie Andrews). The original Despicable Me, however, sacrifices all the complexity and childish drama for farts and burps. The film is constantly moving and never stops to catch its breath, giving frantic comedic timing and launching gag after gag at the audience.

An easygoing, 90-minute alternative, Minions: The Rise of Gru is best suited for kids to laugh and have fun for an hour and a half.
