The idea of alternate universes is currently having a bit of a moment thanks to recent films like Everything Everywhere All At Once and doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This holds true even for independent movies, such as Alrik Bursell's The Alternate, which employs a minimalist strategy to explore the possibility of new universes. Bursell, who also authored the script, explores several intriguing concepts that, despite the current deluge of multiverse-related ventures, nevertheless feel fascinating. The Alternate presents a distinctive perspective on a well-known concept, even though it may have benefited from a more in-depth examination of its ideas and characters.

Filmmaker Jake (Ed Gonzalez Moreno) makes a startling revelation while working on uninteresting projects for fun. It turns out that what at first seemed to be a problem with his equipment is actually a portal to a parallel universe where his dream project has advanced his career and his wife (Natalia Dominguez) doesn't seem to hate him as much. Jake spends an increasing amount of time in this alternate reality because it fascinates him, and eventually his fascination turns into a dangerous obsession.

The Alternate is only a little over an hour and a half long, so it doesn't waste much time. Within the first few minutes of the movie, Jake is distracted from an interview with frequent working partner Peter by the first appearance of the otherworldly doorway. Jake quickly becomes obsessed with the notion of the gateway and what it provides after fiddling with it on his own computer and discovering its true purpose by carelessly tossing a football at it. His wife Kris is less enthused by this finding and laments the fact that it has taken up his time. In The Alternate, Kris is depicted in two different ways, none of which is given enough attention. Particularly the main Kris, who is frequently reduced to griping about her job and Jake. Despite having little to work with, Dominguez is still able to see the human side of her character.

The premise of The Alternate suggests the introduction of intriguing new ideas for the multiverse genre. In the end, its comparatively brief plot barely touches those ideas. Even so, it is a well-told tale with intriguing real-world stakes. The Alternate would have been stronger as a result of the deeper investigation, allowing for a greater impact on its audience. This film can satisfy individuals who are itching for some different universes without the drastic world-ending stakes of most stories.
