The Israeli Defence Forces have begun their second phase of combat with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, according to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement on Saturday. He pledged to "destroy the enemy above ground and below ground." Netanyahu told reporters that the conflict would be "long and hard" and that Palestinians should once again leave the northern Gaza Strip, which was the target of Israel's attacks.

The appeal is being made at the same time that israel shut down the besieged enclave's communications and internet on friday, preventing roughly 2.3 million residents from communicating with one another or the outside world. On Saturday, the conflict between israel and the Islamist Hamas organization in palestine reached its 23rd day. On both sides, there have been almost 9,000 deaths.

At least 8,000 Palestinians have died as a result of Israeli Defence Forces retaliation bombings in Gaza since october 7, according to the Hamas-led health Ministry. On october 7, Hamas launched an offensive on Israeli communities from the Gaza border, resulting in the deaths of over 1,400 persons, the majority of whom were civilians. In addition, it is estimated that during the operation, Hamas seized and transported into Gaza at least 222 individuals, including foreigners. Since then, four of them have been set free.

Here's what else has happened in the war between israel and Hamas:

• The destruction of several structures has left Gazans without access to basic necessities including food, water, fuel, and medications. After Tel Aviv was bombed heavily, phone and internet services were cut off, making their situation worse.

•  On friday night, israel launched soldiers and tanks into Gaza. The Israeli military declared that it was concentrating on infrastructure, referring to the vast tunnel system that Hamas had constructed. It did not specify how big the rollout will be.

•  On Saturday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demanded an "immediate" ceasefire and harshly denounced the "unprecedented escalation" of shelling on Gaza.

• Turkey's "grave statements" have prompted israel to recall a number of its diplomatic envoys.
