A woman in New York City has been apprehended after police discovered a man's severed skull and other body parts put inside a sealed freezer at an apartment in Brooklyn.

The man's body was discovered around 6:15 a.m. (local time) on monday when police arrived at a flat on the fourth floor of the apartment after receiving a tip that a body was possibly being "stored" in the residential complex, according to New York police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, as reported by The New York Post on Tuesday. He stated that the police were identifying the guy.

"During their inquiry, the patrol discovered various body parts in the freezer. At this moment, we're attempting to identify that individual," the official stated.

According to reports, the refrigerator was taped shut to keep the odour of the remains within.

"We've got a head. "We have some limbs," Kenny told reporters on Tuesday. "As of right now it seems like we have the whole body."

A lady who was inside the flat at the time was arrested because she had many open petty larceny warrants, according to reports.

She was hospitalised because she "complained of illness," according to Kenny.

According to Kenny, investigators wanted to talk with her but were unable to do so by tuesday afternoon since she was still in the hospital.

The municipal Medical Examiner's office will formally establish the man's cause of death.
