Hyderabad traffic police have implemented strict restrictions against the unlawful modification of motorbike silencers as part of their efforts to improve road safety and reduce environmental pollution. 1,000 modified silencers were seized and 1,910 charges were booked against the violators during recent special drives. Installing modified silencers is against traffic rules and regulations, with penalties and legal ramifications for violators.

Fitting pressure horns and modified silencers on motorcycles is now illegal under the amended Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicle Act, which carries a maximum fine of Rs 10,000 and a maximum jail sentence of six months. If the pressure horn or modified suppressor generates noise levels higher than 80 dB, this penalty will be applied.

The alteration of motorbike silencers poses major health risks to both individuals and society at large, as well as contributing considerably to environmental degradation by raising air pollution and noise levels. Road offences in hyderabad have increased, including driving on the wrong side of the road, jumping traffic signals, and using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle, according to the police department's 2023 annual report. 523,382 incidences of wrong-side driving were booked in 2023. This represents an 88.66% increase over the 277,422 instances that were documented in 2022.
