The Munjya narrative is based on folklore from the Konkan area of Maharashtra. A young Brahmin boy falls in love with a girl who is seven years older than him in the 1950s. He carries out rituals in the forest when his family disapproves of their connection, but he sadly dies there, leaving his ghost to haunt the peepal trees. The title character, Munjya, accidentally becomes involved with Abhay Verma, a college student who has a crush on his childhood buddy who is already in a committed relationship.
