In the kashmir Valley, terrorist attacks on visitors are rather uncommon. The magnitude of the attack on a group of tourists in pahalgam on tuesday is noteworthy for this reason. Experts interpret the terror assault as a sign of Pakistan's desperation.
 
Terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists at a restaurant in the Baisaran Valley near pahalgam, reportedly killing 26 people.  The attack was claimed by the terrorist organization The Resistance Front (TRF), a division of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). prime minister Narendra Modi, on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, said, "Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice...they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakeable and it will get even stronger."

Amit Shah, the Union home minister, also promised the attackers of the horrific incident the "harshest consequences" possible.
 
Although terrorists have attacked foreign workers in kashmir, the most recent assault on visitors occurred in May 2024, when a Rajasthani couple was wounded by gunfire.
 
Eight pilgrims were killed when terrorists assaulted a vehicle carrying amarnath Yatris in 2017.

"It is obvious that the terrorists chose tourists as their soft target. Counterterrorism expert Faran Jeffery expressed his condolences for the murders of the innocent people, saying, "From what we know so far, this is turning out to be one of the worst attacks in the region's history."
 
Senior Fellow Tehmeena Rizvi of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) described it as a slaughter that pakistan orchestrated out of resentment.
 
Pakistan is making a last-ditch effort to shock Kashmir's tourism sector and make kashmir a worldwide story.

The strike is an attempt to divert attention away from Pakistan's economic problems and the Balochistani uprising, according to its home audience.

PAHALGAM ATACK RARE IN TERMS OF TARGET AND SCALE
Former J&K chief minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti said in a post that she denounced "the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam" and that this was an uncommon attack.
 
"Historically, kashmir has welcomed tourists warmly, making this rare incident deeply concerning," added Mufti.
 
"Needless to say, this attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years," said Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of kashmir - SRINAGAR/JAMMU' target='_blank' title='jammu and kashmir-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>jammu and kashmir, hinting at the scope of the assault.
 
He stated that the number of fatalities was still being determined.

A record number of tourists visited kashmir last year as a result of the significant improvement in the security situation there.
 
According to a report Abdullah released in March, kashmir saw about 35 lakh visitors in 2024, including 43,000 foreign visitors.
 
Data from the home Ministry shows that the number of terror-related occurrences in J&K decreased from 153 in 2019 to 46 in 2023.
 
The Center revoked Article 370, which gave kashmir - SRINAGAR/JAMMU' target='_blank' title='jammu and kashmir-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>jammu and kashmir special status, on august 5, 2019. Since then, there have been instances of stone-pelting in the Valley in addition to terror attacks.

In response to terror acts, india has taken punitive action.  Following the february 2019 Pulwama tragedy, in which 40 CRPF soldiers were killed by Pakistani terrorists who targeted a convoy, indian fighter jets invaded Pakistan-Occupied kashmir and destroyed terror bases there.

The pahalgam terror strike on visitors coincided with VIP visits and was a last-ditch effort by pakistan and its-backed terrorists to break the peace.  Kashmir has started along the path to peace and development, and india, which has declared a zero-tolerance policy for terrorism, will respond appropriately to this atrocity.
