A spoiler piece like this one would typically begin with something like, "Thunderbolts* is now playing in theaters..." However, Marvel Studios offered fan screenings around the united states yesterday and didn't hold anything back in an attempt to generate more buzz for the film. They even showed the post-credits scenes, which is a courtesy that isn't always given to the press at early showing. Consequently, Reddit and other media are rife with spoilers.

About that asterisk, then.  Despite not being included in the title when Thunderbolts* was first revealed, its inclusion has been a major topic of discussion among MCU fans for a number of months.  As soon as they learned the facts, social media scoopers jumped to conclusions, saying it stood for "New Avengers."

It turns out that they were correct.  According to reports, the team was given the moniker in a title card that guarantees them and Lewis Pullman's "Bob" will return, so the asterisk in Thunderbolts*'s title does, in fact, stand for New Avengers.

Following the Avengers Disassembled incident, Brian Michael Bendis first proposed the idea of the New Avengers.  Captain America and iron Man were in charge of a completely different cast of heroes, which included Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, and The Sentry, as the original team was no longer there and Avengers Mansion was in ruins.

It makes sense for "Thunderbolts" to be the New Avengers in the MCU, but it probably indicates that this is a stand-alone film. It's possible that a follow-up may be delivered with a group of villains posing as angels or even going the Suicide Squad route, but we doubt it.
