Even his most devoted supporters began to doubt M. Night Shyamalan's storytelling abilities following a string of big failures, despite the fact that he was once praised as a visionary who may be the next generation's Steven Spielberg.  The failures of bombs like The Last Airbender and After Earth almost put Shyamalan in "director's jail," despite the praise he had received for his work on The Sixth Sense and Signs.

Although Shyamalan was able to return to his bone-chilling roots with The Visit, which was a small success, his comeback was formally launched in 2016 with Split's historic breakthrough.  Split not only established Anya Taylor-Joy as one of the greatest scream queens of her generation, but it also carried on a unique superhero franchise by acting as a covert sequel to Unbreakable.

Who Does Anya Taylor-Joy Play in ‘Split?'
The protagonist of Split is the mysterious kidnapper Wendall Crumb (played by james McAvoy), who has over 23 distinct personas in his head due to dissociative identity disorder.  Despite the fact that many of these identities are more passive, they are terrified of "The Beast," an enigmatic, undeveloped personality.  Taylor-Joy plays Casey Cooke, a teenage misfit who, despite being asked purely out of compassion, joins a birthday celebration with a number of classmates.

However, when Casey and the other girls are abducted, they are all put in a similar hazardous condition. They realize how terrible their plight is when they see the character known as "Barry," who permits the other figures to enter and exit their bodies.  Casey is compelled to consider her violent upbringing, which has left her extremely suspicious of others, even if she is desperate to get free by talking sense into her enigmatic captor.
