Directed by karthik Subbaraj, Suriya's eagerly awaited Retro debuted in theaters on May 1st and has drawn mixed reviews from reviewers and viewers.  Despite having a great start on Day 1, Retro's box office receipts declined in numerous locations on Day 2 and is on the verge of becoming a box office failure.  Karthik Subbaraj recently stated in an interview following the release of Retro that he would no longer be monitoring internet reviews following the film's release.

He believes that a lot of the reviews are full of hateful remarks, but he only sees people enjoying the movie, and he can tell this by the atmosphere of the theaters when he goes there.  Now, this has gone viral.  Following this, numerous internet users retorted that kollywood filmmakers are now adopting this new practice of expressing targeted animosity toward a movie on social media as a way to hide their errors after producing a bad film.

Karthik Subbaraj runs the danger of alienating his audience if he actually stays away from reviews.  He won't grow as a director, he won't comprehend what went wrong, and he might continue to live in a world of selective acclaim.  Retro was not universally disliked.  Some people found it enjoyable.  However, a sizable portion of the audience thought it was monotonous and tiresome.  It won't help in the long term to ignore their voices in the name of "negativity."  He must listen to all criticism, both positive and negative, if he is to develop and succeed.

The kollywood audience argues that although karthik Subbaraj already has a small fan base for his filmmaking approach, he should solicit public feedback without complaining if he wants to appeal to a wider audience.  How well Retro does at the box office in the next days is still up in the air, though.  Until a miracle occurs, it currently appears impossible to reach the breakeven point.
