Regarding the future of the M3GAN franchise, Gerard Johnstone, the director of M3GAN 2.0, has discussed why he isn't yet prepared to propose M3GAN 3.0. He also discussed his thoughts on how the franchise would change with or without him.

The writer-director of M3GAN 2.0, Gerard Johnstone, stated that he does not currently have any intentions to pitch M3GAN 3.0. Johnstone told The hollywood Reporter, "No, I couldn't, and the reason is because I just put every single idea I had into M3GAN 2.0."

He did, however, recognize the franchise's potential for longevity.  "I wouldn't be shocked if there were five more of these films.  Who knows, I might return for the sixth one," he continued.

Johnstone also talked about the AI elements in the sequel.  He pointed out that the follow-up was particularly pertinent given the rise of ChatGPT and the growing conversation about AI at the time of the first movie's release.  Because AI is so prevalent, he explained, "it just made the idea of doing a sequel so much more relevant."

The focus of M3GAN 2.0 is AMELIA, a new military-grade android created with M3GAN's leaked source code.  AMELIA goes rogue and disobeys official orders.  Because M3GAN is the sole protection against the new threat, Gemma (Allison Williams) is forced to revive it.

Johnstone explained that the comparisons between terminator 2: Judgment Day and M3GAN 2.0 were accidental.  He said, "The comparisons began after the script was written."  "But my main focus was on M3GAN's redemption arc."

Johnstone attributed the viral success of the original movie to the trailer's use of M3GAN's dance.  "People would not have been able to take that footage and recut it to make M3GAN the cultural icon that she ended up becoming if Universal had not included that dance," he said.

On june 27, 2025, M3GAN 2.0 will be released in theaters.
