Voices are growing that the name of the young storm of indian cricket, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, should be included in the Asia Cup 2025 team. In particular, senior players like former chairman of selectors Krishnamachari Srikkanth have openly spoken about bringing him into the team, considering his explosive playing ability. However, it is said that Vaibhav Suryavanshi will not be given a chance in the indian team. The reason for this is not the BCCI. It is the international cricket Council. No one doubts the talent of Vaibhav, who made history by scoring a half-century in his debut match and then a fastest century in the 2025 IPL series. But the regulations of the international cricket Council (ICC) are an obstacle to his immense talent. In order to protect the welfare of young players in the world of cricket, the ICC brought in an important rule in 2020. According to it, a player must be at least 15 years of age to play in any international cricket match for men, women, or under-19. This rule applies to all types of international matches, including ICC-organized series and bilateral series.
The main purpose of bringing this rule is to protect players from excessive physical and mental stress at a young age. As of now, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who was born on march 27, 2011, is only 14 years old. He will celebrate his 15th birthday on march 27, 2026. Therefore, according to the current rules of the ICC, he will not be eligible to play for the indian senior team in the Asia Cup 2025 series. Some people are asking, "Can Vaibhav, who has been able to play in tough series like IPL, not play in international matches?" Here is the key difference. The IPL is a domestic t20 league run by the BCCI. It does not come under the direct control of the ICC. Thus, ICC rules like the age limit do not apply in the IPL. This is why Vaibhav was able to play for the rajasthan Royals team at the age of 14 and create achievements. There is a small exception in the ICC rule. In very, very unusual circumstances, if a player demonstrates playing experience, mental development, and the ability to cope with the pressures of international cricket, the cricket board of the concerned country can make a special application to the ICC to allow a player under the age of 15 to play. But this is something that is granted very rarely. Also, it is a big question mark whether this exception will be granted for a big series like the Asia Cup.
